Story · Chapter 01

What stays behind when the kernel gets sold.

A pile of cashew shells smouldering at golden hour in rural Vietnam — the byproduct historically burned as cheap biomass
2 M t

Cashew shells annually · mostly burned

In Vietnam, every kilo of cashew kernel leaves more than two kilos of shells behind. Until now they were burned as cheap biomass for local boilers. That releases CO₂, pollutes the air, and pays the farmers who collect them almost nothing.

  • CO₂Combustion instead of circular use, avoidable emissions along the supply chain.
  • Air qualityOpen burning in village settings, with no filtering.
  • ValueShells were practically worthless for the producers.

Chapter 02 · The turning point

Out of the fire, into the film.

A biotech team in Singapore extracts the plant-based active Vi-Kang from the shells. Farmers in Vietnam earn for what used to be ash. And in your kitchen, every roll of OKIO closes the loop.

Singapore · Lab work on Vi-Kang

OKIO grows out of the work of Didi Gan and Dr. Jaslyn in Singapore. Two scientists who have spent years working on the same question: how do you turn what the food industry throws away into a better material? From upcycled cashew shells they developed the plant-based active Vi-Kang, the foundation for a new generation of cling film.

Questions

What you probably want to know.

Our film is enhanced with Vi-Kang, a plant-based active ingredient from upcycled cashew shells. Worked into the film material, it helps food under OKIO stay noticeably fresher for longer. We make no specific health claims while EU evaluation procedures are still in progress.

From PBAT and PLA, biodegradable bioplastics based on corn and potato starch. Vi-Kang from upcycled cashew shells is worked into the material. No petroleum-based plastics.

Just add it to your home compost. Under home compost conditions the film fully breaks down into humus in about 26 weeks, tested per OK Compost Home (TÜV Austria). Bio-waste bin is also fine if your municipality accepts bioplastics.

Yes. The film meets EU requirements for food-contact materials per regulation (EU) 10/2011. Tested for fruit, vegetables, bread, cooked food and common household uses.
