Cashew shells per year in Vietnam, mostly burned as cheap biomass
In Vietnam, every kilo of cashew kernel leaves more than two kilos of shells behind. Until now they have mostly been burned in local boilers, and hardly anyone pays for them. Intersnack, one of Europe's largest cashew buyers, went looking for a solution and started a research partnership with the University of Melbourne, where Didi Gan was a student at the time.
Over a million tons of shells a year, mostly burned as cheap biomass.

Out of that research came Vi-Kang, a plant-based active drawn from the cashew shell. The work continued later at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, with Dr. Jaslyn Lee. What used to be ash becomes the material that makes conventional film biologically degradable. In 2020 Didi Gan and Dr. Jaslyn Lee founded N&E Innovations to bring the technology to market. N&E Innovations did not keep Vi-Kang in the lab. Before the technology found its way into cling film for the home, it ran through industrial use, a Singapore Airlines partnership, and international recognition.
First industrial application outside the lab. Vi-MASK protective masks in partnership with Singapore Airlines, sold through their retail shop KrisShop.
Cleaning and disinfection products for professional use. Scaling Vi-Kang production to industrial volumes.
Temasek Foundation's Net Zero Challenge 2024 in Singapore. Zayed Sustainability Prize 2026 in the food category, one million US dollars.

Our film is enhanced with Vi-Kang, a plant-based active ingredient from upcycled cashew shells. Worked into the film material, it helps food under OKIO stay noticeably fresher for longer. We make no specific health claims while EU evaluation procedures are still in progress.
